There are only two international cities outside of the U.S. and Mexico where I’ve ever turned to my wife and said, “I could live here.” One was Barcelona. The other — Cape Town, South Africa.
And if you’ve ever wondered if Cape Town is as amazing as people say, let me confirm: it is. From the moment we landed, I knew this wasn’t just another trip. Cape Town is stunning, safe, clean, and filled with some of the most welcoming people I’ve ever encountered. It’s the kind of place where the food, the landscapes, and the culture all hit at once — and in all the right ways.
The People: South Africa’s Greatest Treasure
I’ve been to many countries, but it’s the people that always define the true character of a place. In South Africa, they shine. Warm, happy, welcoming, and proud of their culture, the people of Cape Town made the biggest impression on me. From hotel staff to Uber drivers to waiters in restaurants, everyone we met carried themselves with joy and hospitality. Their energy was contagious.
The vibe of the people can make or break a trip. In Cape Town, it was one of the biggest highlights. In my personal experience, the locals were kind, warm, helpful, and genuinely excited to share their city and culture. From taxi drivers to servers to guides — I give the people of Cape Town a 10/10.
🏔️ Table Mountain: A Must-Do World Class Hike
If you’re visiting Cape Town, hiking Table Mountain should be at the top of your list of best hikes in Cape Town. It towers over the city with a presence that’s impossible to ignore. My wife and I chose the Plattekilp Gorge Trail — a steep, challenging but safe route — and it was everything we hoped for.
There are other hikes nearby too, like Lions Head, which is also iconic and offers panoramic views. But for us, we came for the crown jewel — and we earned the summit of Table Mountain on foot.
At the top, the views are 360° of perfection, from the shimmering sea to the bustling city below. And once you get there? Grab a beer or bite at the mountaintop café, relax, and soak it all in. Then take the rotating cable car down for a well-earned ride with a view.
I’ve done many hikes in my life, but few compare to hiking Table Mountain. This isn’t just a walk in the park—it’s a challenge. I recommend Plattekilp Gorge Trail, which safely climbs straight up the mountain with stone steps, switchbacks, and steady elevation gain the entire way. But what made it worth it wasn’t just the physical test—it was what waited at the top.
Be very cautious about which trail you choose. Some routes on Table Mountain are technical and dangerous. The Plattekilp Gorge route is steep but safe—no sheer drop-offs or exposed ridgelines.
Hiking Tip: Stick to known trails. Plattekilp Gorge is steep but manageable, with no dangerous cliff drop-offs. Do your research and avoid risky trails unless you’re experienced and equipped.
🛍️ Shopping, Waterfronts, and Sunset Cruises
The V&A Waterfront is lively and diverse — from the huge Victoria Wharf Mall to street performers, shopping, live music, boat tours, and the famous Ferris wheel (called the Cape Wheel). Whether you’re looking for luxury goods, local crafts, or just a beautiful walk by the harbor — this area delivers.
One of our favorite moments was booking a champagne sunset cruise from the V&A Marina. Sailing into the golden light of a South African sunset with Table Mountain towering in the distance was pure magic. The water glistened as we toasted with champagne, soaking up one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. It was peaceful, romantic, and unforgettable.
🐧 Penguins & Vineyards: A Day Trip to Simon’s Town
One of our favorite day trips was driving 45 minutes south to Simon’s Town to visit the Boulders Beach penguin colony. Watching these little guys waddle and swim in their natural habitat is great for kids, animal lovers, or anyone wanting a break from the city vibe.
Afterward, we stopped at Cape Point Vineyards on the way back. The sushi was incredible, the wine was top-tier, and the views of the cliffs and South Atlantic Ocean made it unforgettable.
We initially wanted to explore Stellenbosch, Cape Town’s most famous wine region, but misjudged the time.
Pro tip: Stellenbosch is farther out and deserves its own day. If you’re already in Simon’s Town, try local vineyards like Cape Point for a closer and still fantastic experience.
Queen Victoria Hotel & World Class Dining
We stayed at the Queen Victoria Hotel across the street from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, and the access to restaurants was next level. From five-star seafood dining to sushi, steaks, oysters, and pasta — we tried it all. If you want casual eats, they’ve got McDonald’s. If you want gourmet oysters and South African wine, it’s on every corner. Fresh seafood lovers — this city is for you.
We stayed at the Queen Victoria Hotel, located right at the V&A Waterfront near the Victoria Wharf Mall. From this spot, we were steps away from endless food options—everything from five-star fine dining to quick bites. We tried it all: sushi, seafood, steak, pasta, oysters, mussels—you name it. Cape Town’s food scene absolutely delivers. If you’re a foodie, this city belongs on your list.
And if you’re a coffee or café enthusiast like me, the marina area is filled with charming cafés where you can sip a cappuccino while overlooking the yachts and distant cliffs of Table Mountain.
