Recently, my family and I visited DC as part of our 2025 Annual Wagner Family Road Trip. Despite visiting during peak summer heat, we found plenty of shade beneath towering trees and thoroughly enjoyed exploring all this historic city has to offer.

The National Mall serves as the heartbeat of Washington DC, a vast, grassy park that connects iconic landmarks from the Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial. My family spent an entire day wandering through this area, taking in the impressive monuments and historic memorials that honor American heroes and history.
Lincoln Memorial: One of our favorite spots, offering an inspiring view back toward the reflecting pool and Washington Monument. Inspired by a scene from Captain America: Winter Soldier, I ran a memorable lap around the reflecting pool—exactly 1.1 miles.
Washington Monument: Visible from almost every corner of DC, the Washington Monument towers above the city, offering a breathtaking focal point.
World War II Memorial: Beautifully designed, this memorial gracefully honors those who served, with intricate fountains and marble structures.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial: An emotionally powerful wall etched with the names of soldiers who gave their lives, humbling all visitors.
We also visited the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, where we sat on the steps enjoying one of the most breathtaking sunsets over the Tidal Basin, looking back towards the glowing lights of the Washington Monument and National Mall. It was one of those moments you never forget—peaceful and majestic.
A Perfect Stay: Hotel Washington
Our home base was the Hotel Washington, ideally located across from the White House and the Treasury Building. This hotel provided easy access to every major attraction we wanted to visit. With a luxurious rooftop lounge offering panoramic views of iconic landmarks, it’s an ideal spot to unwind after a busy sightseeing day.
Nearby, you’ll find elegant restaurants and vibrant nightlife options. Just be aware—downtown DC, particularly around Hotel Washington, is quite pricey. Cocktails can easily cost $30 or more. Yet the elegant surroundings, sophisticated ambiance, and historic charm often justify the splurge for a special night out.

Even if museums aren’t typically your scene, the Smithsonian museums are an absolute must-visit, and they turned out to be one of the major highlights of our trip. We were pleasantly surprised by how engaging, educational, and entertaining these museums were—truly captivating for every family member, no matter their age.
1. National Museum of American History
This museum quickly captured our imagination with iconic American artifacts such as the original Star-Spangled Banner, the First Ladies’ gown collection, and Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. It was a moving experience to explore key pieces of our nation’s past, beautifully displayed through engaging exhibits. Even the kids found it fascinating, connecting history lessons from school to the real-life items before their eyes.
2. National Museum of Natural History
Stepping into the National Museum of Natural History felt like entering another world. My children were mesmerized by the towering dinosaur skeletons and the dazzling gem and mineral collections, including the legendary Hope Diamond. We spent hours navigating interactive wildlife displays and vibrant ocean exhibits. The museum has a way of effortlessly blending education and entertainment, making it ideal for families seeking adventure and learning.
3. National Air and Space Museum
Of all the Smithsonian museums, the National Air and Space Museum was easily my personal favorite. The awe-inspiring displays included historic aircraft and spacecraft such as the original Wright Brothers’ flyer, the Apollo 11 command module, and even real lunar landers. My entire family was captivated by exhibits on aviation, space exploration, and hands-on simulations. For anyone fascinated by flight and exploration, this museum is genuinely inspiring.

Playing at the Capitol
One of our trip’s simple yet memorable moments was throwing a football with my son Joey on the plush green lawns directly in front of the U.S. Capitol. Relaxing under shaded trees, my family watched on, soaking up the history and beauty around us.
Zip Around on Electric Scooters
Due to the intense summer heat, Joey and I rented electric scooters to zip quickly between monuments, while the rest of our family opted for short Uber rides. This approach made sightseeing easier, quicker, and far more comfortable in the DC heat.
Family-Friendly Hiking
Just outside DC, we ventured into the nearby Great Falls Park, offering incredible hiking trails, scenic views, and an ideal nature escape close to the bustling city.
Washington DC Nightlife and Dining
Washington DC’s downtown scene thrives after dark. The city comes alive with stylish cocktail bars, rooftop lounges, fine dining, and trendy cafes.
Georgetown: Stroll through this charming neighborhood full of boutiques, bakeries, and upscale dining options. M Street is the hotspot.
The Wharf: Along the Potomac River, this trendy area offers waterfront dining, fresh seafood, and vibrant nightlife.
CityCenterDC: Upscale restaurants and bars make this area perfect for date nights or sophisticated gatherings.
A Note on Safety and Awareness
While our overall DC experience was extremely positive, I must highlight safety concerns we personally encountered. Sadly, we witnessed a disturbing incident involving a homeless individual nearly attacking two children with their mother, as well as the theft of an electric bike directly in front of the White House fence. Both incidents had minimal police intervention, a concerning reflection of the city’s current challenges.
While my family and I felt safe overall, we remained vigilant, especially during late evenings. It’s important to always stay alert and cautious in major cities, and DC is no exception.
If local authorities could resolve these issues, Washington DC would easily earn a perfect score in my book. However, considering safety, my current rating sits around a 7 or 8 out of 10.
